Mental Health Nursing

As part of Integral Health Armidale's commitment to integrative medicine, the service of a Mental Health Nurse is available, at no cost, to patients. Mental health nursing is a specialised field of nursing with a focus on the person's individual feelings, thoughts and lifestyle. The mental health nurse gets to know the person and works with the person to set goals, problem solve and make changes in the person's feelings, thoughts and behaviour patterns. The mental health nurse can educate, support, coach, and suggest other sources of help as well as monitoring progress towards goals. The mental health nurse works in partnership to promote psychological well-being and emotional health, improve relationships, and re-establish peace of mind.  Mental health nurses protect patients' rights and support their families, carers and significant others. The service is strictly confidential.

If your GP refers you to the Mental Health Nurse you will need to make an appointment. Your first appointment will be long enough for you to discuss your issues, prioritise goals and make plans towards achieving them. Education, counselling, support and liaison with other services may also take place with your permission. After your initial appointment, telephone support may be offered as well as face to face sessions, or meetings may be arranged outside the practice office if preferred.
